Apprenticeship units have arrived: 30 hours of funded AI leadership training for your managers
On 21 April 2026 Skills England approved the first ten apprenticeship units, with delivery able to start from 28 April. This is the most useful thing to happen in employer funded training for some time, and almost nobody has noticed yet.
What an apprenticeship unit is
It is a short, funded course built from the same employer led occupational standards that sit behind apprenticeships. Units run from 30 to 140 hours over one to sixteen weeks.
The point is speed. An apprenticeship takes someone into a new occupation over a year or more. A unit closes one identified skills gap for someone already doing the job, in weeks.
Eligibility reflects that. Units are for employed people aged 19 and over whose employer has identified an upskilling need. They are explicitly not for career changers.
The three AI leadership units
Three of the first ten are Level 5 AI leadership units, each a minimum of 30 hours with a maximum funding value of £750:
AU0009, AI strategy and opportunity. For the people deciding what the organisation should be doing with AI at all.
AU0010, AI adoption, procurement and governance. For the people evaluating suppliers, building the business case and signing it off.
AU0011, AI delivery and organisational transformation. For the people who have to make it work once it is bought, including the workforce and risk side.
They are built from four occupational standards, including AI and automation practitioner, chartered manager and senior leader. That matters, because it means the content came from employers rather than from a technology vendor.
How the funding works from August 2026
For learners aged 19 to 24, training is 100 per cent government funded. For learners aged 25 and over where a levy paying employer has insufficient funds, the split is 75 per cent government and 25 per cent employer. Employers who do not pay the levy are fully funded.
Who this is really for
If you have a manager who is being asked about AI and quietly making it up, this is the thing that fixes it. Thirty hours, on your own organisation's decisions, with something written at the end that you can actually use.
