Team Leader Level 3 loses its funding in September: what employers should do now

Team leader briefing colleagues

If you were planning to put a supervisor or new manager through the Team Leader apprenticeship this autumn, the timing has changed. Here is the position, plainly.

What has changed

Team Leader at Level 3, standard ST0384, is not government funded for new starts from 1 September 2026. It is one of sixteen standards being defunded from that point, confirmed in a Department for Education update on 25 March 2026.

Anyone who has already started continues to be funded through to completion. This affects new starts only. If you have people on programme, nothing about their apprenticeship changes.

What that means in practice

If you have someone you intended to enrol, the sensible move is to talk to us now rather than in August. Start dates before 1 September remain funded, and places on a standard that is about to close tend to go quickly.

If that window does not work for you, there are still good options. Which one fits depends on what you were actually trying to achieve.

If the goal was management capability, a privately funded management programme is the straightforward replacement, and it comes without the eligibility rules that apply to funded provision.

If the goal was to give a capable person a funded development opportunity, look at the new apprenticeship units. They are short, funded, Level 5, and aimed at people already in post. For a supervisor who is going to be dealing with new technology in their team, they may actually be a better fit than Team Leader was.

If the person is on a genuine technical path, our AI and Automation Practitioner Level 4 apprenticeship remains funded and takes them further.

A word of caution

Details on defunding have been moving, and some of what has been reported has come from trade press rather than published guidance. Before you commit to a plan, check the current position for your specific standard and your own organisation. We will do that with you rather than guess.

Call 01254 679998 or send us a message and we will confirm where you stand.
