What AI Units are

Short, senior, and built around your business

Apprenticeship units are a new kind of funded training: short, employer led courses for people already in work, designed to close one specific skills gap quickly rather than commit someone to a qualification lasting a year or more.

Alphabet Training delivers three of them, under the heading AI Leadership. Each one is a Level 5 unit of 30 guided learning hours, taught across six workshops, and each is aimed at the people in your organisation who actually hold the decisions: what you should be using AI for, what you should be buying, and how you make it work once it is in.

They are not an introduction to AI tools. The room is made up of managers and leaders, and the work is done on your own organisation rather than on a case study. Everyone leaves with a document written for their employer, not a certificate and a folder of notes.

You can put someone through one unit on its own, or run all three as a pathway of roughly 90 hours that takes a leader from setting direction, through buying and governing AI, to delivering the change across the organisation.

The three units

Each unit stands alone. Most organisations start with the one that fits where they are now, then add the others as the work moves on.

Unit AU0009

AI Strategy and Opportunity

Level 5 · 30 hours · Six workshops

For leaders setting the direction. Best suited to organisations at an early or exploratory stage, where AI is being talked about but nothing has been decided.

  • Tell real AI capability apart from vendor language
  • Screen opportunities on value, feasibility and risk
  • Turn an idea into a defined use case and a pilot design
  • Write an AI strategy aligned to your goals and risk appetite
  • Apply UK GDPR to AI and find the gaps in existing policy
  • Build human oversight and governance proportionate to your size

Your organisation gets a written AI strategy covering vision, principles, priority areas, governance, workforce, measurement and risk appetite.

Unit AU0010

AI Adoption, Procurement and Governance

Level 5 · 30 hours · Six workshops

For the people evaluating options, building the business case and signing things off. The unit to take when you are about to spend money.

  • Score AI solutions and vendors on cost, performance, risk and data readiness
  • Test and benchmark before committing, not after
  • Judge vendor lock in, data, intellectual property and sustainability risk
  • Choose between on premise, cloud, third party and hybrid, and justify it
  • Write acceptance criteria with a metric and a baseline behind them
  • Design a governance framework with named roles and escalation routes

Your organisation gets a procurement and governance case, including a whole life cost and benefit position, a weighted vendor scorecard and an assurance pack.

Unit AU0011

AI Delivery and Organisational Transformation

Level 5 · 30 hours · Six workshops

For leaders who have to make it land. The unit that deals with the part most organisations underestimate: people, risk and what happens after go live.

  • Build a phased delivery plan with milestones, owners and dependencies
  • Handle workforce impact, reskilling and role redesign honestly
  • Run an algorithmic impact assessment and evidence your equality duties
  • Monitor deployed systems for bias, drift and security weaknesses
  • Plan incident and security response before you need it
  • Lead the response when an AI system fails or behaves unexpectedly

Your organisation gets a delivery and transformation plan, with a risk register, an accountability structure, a crisis response plan and a monitoring routine.

How it works

Six workshops, one real piece of work

Taught in the room

Six sequenced workshops, each in two halves with a break between. Cohorts are capped at 12, so the session is a working discussion between peers rather than a lecture. Every hour counts as off the job training.

Applied to your organisation

The workbook activities in each session build, piece by piece, into one substantial document written for your business. Learners leave with something you can act on, not a portfolio of exercises.

Assessed by conversation

No exams. The written work is submitted, then there is a reflective professional conversation of 20 to 30 minutes, one to one, covering how the learner applied the thinking in their own role.

Built on employer standards

The curriculum is drawn from four employer led occupational standards, covering AI and automation, machine learning engineering, chartered management and senior leadership.

You sign it off

At the end you confirm the work reflects the learner's real role and that you have seen its impact. That keeps the training honest and keeps the funding evidence in order.

Paperwork handled

We run the eligibility checks, the skills scan, the learning plan and the funding evidence. Your part is releasing the person for the sessions and giving them real decisions to work on.

Who it is for

Entry requirements

These are leadership units. The entry bar reflects that, because the assessed work asks the learner to make decisions on behalf of their employer.

  • Employed and aged 19 or over
  • Working in a leadership position, with the autonomy to deliver technological change and inform investment decisions
  • Minimum Level 2 English and maths
  • Able to attend all six workshops and complete the activity between them

Before training starts, every learner completes a short eligibility check, an initial assessment in English and maths, and a skills scan against the unit criteria. That gives us a starting point for each person and tells us early if anyone needs learning support.

Where a learner has already covered a large part of a unit elsewhere, the funding rules limit what can be claimed, so we check for overlap before anyone enrols. Prior completion of the first unit is useful before the other two, but it is not required.

Common questions

Before you enquire

These units are currently eligible for public funding. What your organisation is entitled to depends on your circumstances, so we work that out with you before anything is committed and confirm the position in writing. Send an enquiry and we will come back to you with the funding position for your organisation.

Each unit is 30 guided learning hours across six workshops, plus time between sessions to develop the written piece. Sessions are scheduled with the cohort in advance so the dates are known well ahead and nobody is pulled off the floor at short notice.

No. These are decision making units, not engineering units. The content covers what AI can and cannot do, how to judge a supplier, how to govern a system and how to lead the change. Anyone who can read a business case can do this work.

Yes, and it usually works better. Cohorts are capped at 12, so where an organisation wants a group we can look at a closed cohort for your team alone. Tell us roughly how many people you have in mind on the enquiry form.

Nobody repeats the whole unit. We identify the specific criteria where the evidence was not strong enough, and the learner either strengthens that part of the written work or revisits those points in the conversation, within the timescale the funding rules allow.

An apprenticeship is a full occupational programme lasting a year or more and takes someone into a new role. An apprenticeship unit is short and targeted at a specific skills gap for someone already doing the job. If you want the longer route as well, our AI and Automation Practitioner apprenticeship covers it.
